Internship Introspective: Farewell from a Bravo Intern

One Company: Bravo Group

Two Things I Learned:

1 I have a lot to learn!

It didn't take me long at Bravo to realize that I was surrounded by some of the best and most knowledgeable people in Pennsylvania politics and public relations.  Their experience and knowledge was intimidating at first but, over the course of the internship, I saw all of my coworkers as resources and learned from them. Many Bravo employees have experiences in a variety of different fields that helps fuel the success of Bravo as a "hybrid" firm.  Gaining knowledge in fields related to your primary interests can only help enable a more comprehensive understanding of complex issues.

2 Go out on a limb

It goes without saying that in today's world young employees have to be ready to take risks and tackle issues that they are not used to in order to better prepare themselves for assignments that clients may give them. When I start at Bravo, I didn’t know much about healthcare or energy, Bravo’s two main concentrations. Now, the knowledge and exposure I had to these areas during my internship has opened new doors and unveiled new interests I may want to pursue down the road.

Three Warnings:

1 Choosing your choice of coffee in the morning will be a daily dilemma

Full Disclosure: I love coffee.  The rest of you java heads could only imagine my surprise and excitement on my first day when I was offered one of 14 flavors!  While incredibly appreciated, the selection has made my morning and afternoon coffee choosing a daily ordeal.  Every time I choose French Roast you feel like you are betraying your good friends... Hazelnut and Breakfast Blend!

2 You may become addicted to Pita Pit

Surprisingly in an office full of politically engaged people Pita Pit may be the most polarizing topic in my time at Bravo.  While some people, myself included, are on a first name basis with some of their employees, others have sworn off Pita Pit entirely.

3 You will get lost in the Capitol

While Pennsylvania has one of, if not the most, beautiful Capitols in the country it can also be incredibly difficult to navigate.  After several times of forgetting to go up the appropriately named "Sneaky" and "Super Sneaky" stairwells to find hidden legislative offices, you will begin to understand how cavernous the building can be.

Four Pieces of Advice:

1 Learn what kind of work space you want to keep

I learned very early during on in my time at Bravo that if my work space is not impeccably clean, or at the very least organized, I have a difficult time working efficiently.  While imminent deadlines and impromptu assignments are the norm, keeping a comfortable works pace is an essential part of working efficiently.  A comfortable work space also includes details such as what your signature snack is (mine is almonds) and how you organize your bulletin board.

2 Sometimes your best ability is your availability

In my time at Bravo I've learned that simply being available and open to new opportunities is one of the best ways to open doors and meet new people.  Volunteering for  jobs and taking on optional assignments is the quickest way to gain respect from the people you work with, as some of the best networking and career opportunities often come from impromptu volunteer jobs and unplanned events.  By simply "tagging along" with those above you, you can come into contact with some incredibly interesting and important people.

3 Understand necessity

George Clooney's Major Gates character crowns "necessity" to be the most important thing in life in the Gulf War drama Three Kings.  Gates states "people do what is most necessary to them at any given moment" while explaining the actions of then Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.  While the war reference is admittedly far fetched, it is incredibly applicable to a work environment.  While your boss or a client may not be in a war zone, they too are guided by necessity.  Getting to know the people you work for, and with, will help you understand what they need from you and your work.  Understanding and utilizing others needs will make you a more efficient and effective worker.

4 Enjoy your time

Whether it be debating the finer points of immigration reform or discussing a certain sweater vest wearing politician the people at Bravo are without a doubt top notch employees and even better people.  Enjoy your limited time with them in both a professional and social setting to get the most out of the experience.

"Do you know the one thing that gives me pleasure? It's to see my dividends coming in." - John Rockefeller
